I dont like pudding

This recipe has to be close to 100 years old and is still popular today and its easy and cheap to make

this is poor mans bread and butter pudding

1/2 loaf bread (Use fruit loaf, hot cross buns etc & omit fruit)
1 cup of mixed fruit
1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 egg beaten
1/2 cup sugar

Cut crusts off bread. (Freeze crusts for soup sticks).
Submerge bread in a bowl of water, then drain and squeeze the bread removing as much water as possible, bread should be like dough.
Mix bread with beaten egg and remaining ingredients.
Put in a 7 x 11 tin & bake in oven on 170C until brown.
Serve hot with custard or cold sliced & buttered.
